Hypnotherapy for Vaginismus

What is Vaginismus?

Vaginismus is the involuntary tensing of the pelvic floor muscles/the muscles that surround the entrance to the vagina and control the vaginal opening, causing pain, tightness and sensitivity in the vaginal wall and entrance, particularly when attempting sexual intercourse. It can be triggered with the mere expectation of sexual intercourse.

What causes Vaginismus?

Vaginismus can have several possible causes, including:

  • past sexual trauma or abuse,
  • emotional and psychological factors,
  • past experience of pain or discomfort during coitus,
  • physical problems.

What can be done to overcome Vaginismus?

Women experiencing the symptoms of Vaginismus should consult a health care practitioner in order to find out if there are any contributing physical factors. Subsequent to exploring possible physical causes, women should then consult an appropriately qualified therapist to explore other possible causes which may have a traumatic, psychological, or experiential basis.

There are behavioural and psychotherapeutic therapies that can be employed to help to overcome factors other than those physical, including hypnotherapy. Jeremy employs a wide range of appropriate therapies to assist women to move past these often distressing involuntary reactions.

How Hypnotherapy can help resolve Vaginismus:

Emotional reactions are always experienced in the body-mind at some level. The sexual organs are an important part of the body-mind for both women and men. Negative experience can severely impact on sexual functioning, particularly when the negative experience has been sexual in nature. This is true for both men and women. Vaginismus, and other forms of genito-pelvic pain are one possible consequence for women. Hypnotherapy is a deep therapy that can release the memories held in the body, leading to relaxation of the involuntary reactions as negative experience is finally resolved. Relevant psychotherapy approaches are utilised within hypnosis, in order to aide the process.
